Using Flashback Database and a physical standby database, you can configure a temporary clone database for testing and reporting. The temporary clone can later be resynchronized with the primary database.

Flashback Database lets you quickly recover an Oracle database to a previous time to correct problems caused by logical data corruptions or user errors. Flashback Database is not true media recovery, because it does not restore physical files. But Flashback Database, using RMAN and SQL FLASHBACK DATABASE commands, can be preferable to using the RESTORE and RECOVER commands in some cases, because it is easier, finishes sooner, and does not require restoring the whole database.

The flash recovery area must be set to enable flashback logging. When using flashback logs, you may recover your entire database to a prior point in time without restoring files. Flashback is the preferred point in time recovery method in the recovery wizard when appropriate.
