Code golf
Codegolf ist ein freizeitlicher Programmierwettbewerb, bei dem die Teilnehmer versuchen, einen bestimmten Algorithmus mit so wenig Quelltext wie möglich zu implementieren.
Code golf is a type of recreational computer programming competition in which participants strive to achieve the shortest possible source code that implements a certain algorithm.
Die Bezeichnung "Codegolf" ist daher gewählt, dass es im konventionellen Golf gewünscht ist, möglichst die geringste Punktzahl zu erreichen, im Gegensatz zur höchsten Punktzahl, wie es bei den sonstigen Sport- und Spielwettbewerben normalerweise üblich wäre.
The term "code golf" is derived from the similarity of its goal with that of conventional golf, where participants seek to achieve the lowest possible score, rather than the highest, as is the standard in most sports and game scoring systems.
Während die Bezeichnung "Codegolf" vermutlich das erste Mal 1999 im Zusammenhang mit der Programmiersprache Perl Verwendung fand, und später aufgrund der Verbreitung der Sprache hinsichtlich des Schreibens von RSA-Verschlüsselungen populärer wurde, sind ähnliche informelle Wettbewerbe von APL-Hackern bereits früher bekannt gewesen.
Whilst the term "code golf" was apparently first used in 1999 with Perl, and later popularised through the use of Perl to write a program that performed RSA encryption, similar informal competition was known to have been popular with earlier APL hackers.
