To assign an outline code to a task or resource, open a task or resource sheet view, and then click the field to the right of where you want to insert the outline code field.
Use the Code Mask Definition dialog box to create, review, or revise an alphanumeric outline code format, or mask, for a custom outline code field. Outline codes are custom tags for tasks that share traits, for example, A..c or MGR. You can use them to group tasks or resources into a hierarchical structure that's meaningful to you when you view your project. For example, you can create outline codes to represent the job codes or cost accounting codes associated with tasks. He creates a custom outline code field named Organization, along with a lookup table with the list of codes. He applies the appropriate organization codes to the applicable resources. He sees the hierarchical and summarized information he needs when grouping by the custom Organization outline code field.
