Regarding the standardization issue, the Information Technology Services Division is carrying out an extensive personal computer replacement programme through which hardware and software standards for all desktop stations and applications are established.
Supplies and equipment consist primarily of normal office supplies, a computer replacement programme (about 1/one third of all UNCCD computers pereach year), and a software upgrade programme (since much of the UNCCD software will no longer be supported by the manufacturers after beginning sometime 2006).
Fifteen computers have been installed in seven conference rooms, with more to be installed as the Secretariat computer replacement programme progresses.
Computer equipment includes a computer replacement programme (about 1/3 of all UNCCD computers are replaced each year in line with practices followed by other United Nations organizations).
As of May 2004, 1,157 personal computers and printers, from the Organization's personal computer replacement programme, were donated to the permanent missions.
Provision in the amount of $205,500 was made to cover the cost of equipment not covered by the United Nations replacement programme, such as additional notebook computers, replacement servers, scanners and network management software.
The increased requirement for information technology equipment reflects the provision to replace obsolete communications equipment, 407 desktop computers and monitors, 86 laptop computers and 98 printers and monitors, as part of an ongoing replacement programme.
The increase is requested to replace approximately 75 per cent of the personal computers of the Commission, which will become obsolete in the biennium 2004-2005, 50 per cent of its monitors and regular replacement programmes for other office automation equipment and for acquisition and replacement costs for software
The Committee points out that this replacement programme appears to be overly ambitious, as the Commission, under the regular budget, currently has 185 posts in the Professional category and above and 315 General Service and Local level posts, a certain number of which do not require a personal computer to perform their functions, for example, drivers and security officers.
As to the replacement programme for information technology equipment, the 1,081 items of information technology equipment and accessories include 250 desktop computers (including monitors), 70 laptop computers, 55 network printers of differing capacities, 22 network routers, 369 uninterruptible power supply units and 18 digital senders.
The replacement programme reflects the ongoing standardization of network infrastructure.
