Dr. Scott was educated at Macclesfield King's School, where he became enamored of cricket, chess and music, and at Manchester University (1948-1956) where Nobel Laureates Blackett and Lewis were in post and the first stored program computer ran.
The lecture includes some remarks on how the task of building a stored program computer appeared to an experienced electronic engineer at a time when no such computer had yet been built.
Dr. Wilkes focused his attention upon the proposals of the group headed by Dr. John von Neumann, and devised the ultrasonic delay line storage unit, stored program control mechanism, and other apparatus necessary for the realization of these proposals; and in 1949 he led the entire world by developing a stored program computer, the EDSAC, at the practical level.
After that, the machine debugging proceeded smoothly, and ETL Mark III was completed in July 1956. It was the second stored program computer, and the first transistor computer, in Japan.
He was responsible for the development of EDSAC, the first stored program computer to go into service, the prototype of the modern computer, and has conducted a great deal of highly original research into computer architecture necessary to realize high-performance computers. Citation Dr. Maurice Vincent Wilkes is an eminent computer engineer who first developed the "stored-program computer," the prototype of most modern computers, as well as devising many of the principal arithmetic control procedures adopted in contemporary computers.
In 1961, he successfully developed TODBAC-3100, a stored program computer. Both computers were full-scale business computers, very rare in those days, with a line printer and a card input-output equipment.
Maurice Vincent Wilkes | Kyoto Prize A computer engineer who has made an enormous contribution to the research and development of computers for practical use.He was responsible for the development of EDSAC, the first stored program computer to go into service, the prototype of the modern computer, and has conducted a great deal of highly original research into computer architecture necessary to realize high-performance computers.
This computer named ETL Mark III was completed in July 1956, and became the second stored program computer completed in Japan following the Fujic, and the first transistor computer in Japan. In those days when computer development was usually far behind the schedule, it was remarkable that Mark III was completed within a very short period, thanks in a great deal to the reliable storage unit, and to the ease of component replacement. Because Mark III suffered from unreliable early transistors of point-contact type, it was decided, as soon as reliable junction transistors became available, to build ETL Mark IV with the use of these, based on the self-confidence acquired by the speedy completion of Mark III.
This was the second stored program computer in Japan following Okazaki Bunji's Fujic, but the first transistor computer in Japan. ETL Mark III suffered from the lack of reliability of its transistors of point contact type that had been the only high-speed type when Mark III had been planned. As soon as reliable transistors of junction type became available, Takahashi together with Nishino Hiroji, Aiso Hideo, Matsuzaki Isokazu and others, based on the self-confidence acquired by speedy completion of Mark III, started to develop ETL Mark IV computer with the use of these transistors, and completed it in November 1957.

One drum could contain 4,000 instructions and has an access time of 4,400 microseconds; thus it was a stored-program computer.
Dr. Maurice Vincent Wilkes is an eminent computer engineer who first developed the "stored-program computer," the prototype of most modern computers, as well as devising many of the principal arithmetic control procedures adopted in contemporary computers. He has thereby made major contributions to the development and practical implementation of computers.
