KT-Pilot-Computer Museum KT-Pilot was developed in 1961 through joint research on an "electronic computer employing a new system," by Kyoto University and Tokyo Shibaura Electric Co., Ltd. (Now, Toshiba Corporation), and was Japan's first computer using a true microprogram system.
LSI and MSI were used for computing elements and memory elements, which greatly improved both performance and reliability. The systems were equipped with a self-diagnosis function enabling early discovery of malfunctions and quick recovery. Equipment miniaturization and greater system economy were achieved by using the microprogram system throughout for instruction control, system control and input/output control.
During the development the project exploited the advantages of the microprogram system - such as facilitating software development by adjusting the architecture during development. Once completed, however, in order to ensure a good software line-up, it avoided architecture variability like in the KT-Pilot.
These Mitsubishi Electric machines, announced in 1976, were the first Japanese-made minicomputers to use bipolar LSI in their central processing unit. They employed the microprogram system, and used bipolar LSI with a 4-bit slice for the arithmetic control section, and 1 Kbit bipolar ROM for control memory.

The opportunity for this joint research arose when Hagiwara Hiroshi, a professor in the Faculty of Engineering at Kyoto University, sounded out Tokyo Shibaura Electric about joint research on an "electronic computer employing a new system". In development of the KT-Pilot, priority was placed more on establishing the microprogram system than on achieving a practical system, and the development clarified methods of rewriting microprograms and increasing their speed. These results were announced jointly by Hagiwara (Kyoto University), Amo, Matsushita and Yamanouchi (Tokyo Shibaura Electric) at the IFIP held in Munich in August 1962.
